Add-on Solar Battery Storage

With Sunnova +SunSafe®, you can add a Tesla Powerwall to your existing home solar system with little to no upfront costs.

During a power outage, your solar-only system will not work unless you have a battery.1

Add Tesla Powerwall

  • Increase Your Energy Independence

Reduce the electricity that you get from your utility. Power your home with the solar energy stored in your battery, even when the sun goes down.2

  • Resilient Backup Power

During a power outage, your battery can power your most needed lights and appliances, and sometimes your whole home.1

  • Battery Protection

Your Tesla Powerwall comes with a limited manufacturer warranty for the term of your agreement. If you’re a Sunnova +SunSafe® customer, we take care of maintenance and repairs.3 Even after your agreement ends, the battery will still have capacity as outlined in your warranty.4

  • Protection from Peak Rates

If you live in a market with time of use (TOU) rates, your battery will be automatically configured to protect you from peak rates and maximize your net metering credits.

Customize Your Tesla Powerwall

The Tesla Powerwall has many configuration options. As a Sunnova +SunSafe® customer, we will get you started by setting up your battery in one of three modes of operation. You will be able to further customize your battery configuration if needed:

Self-Consumption (Self-Powered) Backup Power Time of Use (TOU) Optimization (Time-Based Control)
Self-consumption mode stores any solar energy not used during the day. Some of this stored energy can be used at night or when your home needs more power than your solar system can provide. Backup power mode reserves all of your Powerwall’s energy to power to your most needed lights and appliances in a power outage. Your Powerwall will only discharge during a power outage. During peak pricing hours, your solar panels and Powerwall will power your home. Any excess solar energy production will be sent to the grid to maximize your net metering credits.

How Sunnova +SunSafe® Works

1. During the day, solar panels turn sun rays into energy.

2. The solar energy travels through your inverter to make the energy usable for your home.

3. Your solar energy powers your home.

4. Excess solar energy will charge your battery or be sent to your utility for net metering, if eligible. Your battery will be charged before any solar energy goes to your utility.

Your nighttime power will depend on your battery configuration. You’ll likely be using a combination of battery energy and grid electricity.

Solar systems and/or batteries may require repairs after weather events and such repairs may be delayed due to forces outside of our control. No assurances can be given that the solar system or the battery will always work. You should never rely upon either of these to power life support or other medical devices.
