About +SunSafe™ - Add-On Solar Battery Storage

Power your home1, day and night, with Sunnova’s +SunSafe battery storage system. Add our battery technology to your existing solar system and gain comfort in knowing your home will be powered with renewable energy, even when the grid is down.

How it Works:

01

Sunlight hits the solar panels,
producing clean, renewable energy.

02

Some of that clean energy powers
your home during the day.

03

And some of that clean energy is stored in the battery to be used at night.

04

At night, your home runs on the
stored energy, powering things like lights, TVs and air conditioners.

05

Your home is connected to the grid, so you can get extra power when you need it or export your excess energy2

06

In case of a power outage, your lights will still be on, thanks to your system’s backup energy.

+SunSafe Availability

+SunSafe™ is currently available in the below locations. If your area is not listed, we are continually expanding into new markets. Fill in the form below to find out more information.

1Your solar system production will vary based on weather and other factors. Your solar production must be consumed at your home or stored in your system’s batteries. If there isn’t demand for your solar production at home or capacity in the batteries to store additional energy, the solar system will decrease the amount of power it is producing.  This reduction of production is known as curtailment, and may happen when the +SunSafe battery storage system is working as backup power. When the grid is up, you will be able to export energy back to the grid via net metering or purchase supplemental electricity from the grid when needed.

2Not all markets are able to export excess energy. Please check with your local utility on availability.

3The amount of power available during a power outage is limited, depending on the loads connected and the customer usage during a power outage.

4Based on manufacturers’ warranty. Refer to the Warranty Agreement for complete warranty terms and limitations.

5New homeowner must meet Sunnova’s underwriting requirements.

Stored Energy and the Grid

Thanks to its smart technology, +SunSafe™ automatically detects when to switch from solar energy to stored energy.

When the grid is down: When the grid is up:

When the grid is down, +SunSafe™ will work as a source of backup power. The power you’ll have available during a power outage will be limited and only allocated to appliances connected to your “Secured Panel.”

The Secured Panel, also known as the Critical Load Panel, is an additional breaker panel, designated to provide backup power to specific loads during a power outage.

Some of the specific loads you can energize with backup power include: refrigerator, freezer, a few lights and a few outlets.

To maximize the usage of your solar energy, shift as much energy consumption to the daytime as possible. The battery storage system recharges throughout the day for nighttime usage.

The combination of your existing solar systems plus your new +SunSafe™ battery storage system will provide most of the power your home needs, day and night. When there’s need for extra power, this additional power will be supplied by the grid. Your utility will charge you for that power, in addition to any other fees that apply.

Your solar system produces energy, the unused solar energy will be stored in the +SunSafe™ battery storage system. If the battery storage system is full, the excess energy will be exported to the grid or sent to the ground depending on your utility2.

To maximize the usage of your solar energy, shift as much energy consumption to the daytime as possible. The battery storage system recharges throughout the day for nighttime usage.

In case of a power outage, your most needed appliances and lights can stay on, day and night. Backup power will last only for a limited number of hours, depending on the loads connected and, more importantly, your power usage during the power outage. When charged at 100%, the battery storage can give you about 10 hours of backup energy, based on expected usage.

How Billing Works

Once your storage system is operating, you will start receiving a bill for your new Sunnova +SunSafe™ storage system. If you also bought your solar system from Sunnova and are still making payments, you will continue to receive a bill for that purchase. Additionally, you will continue receiving your utility bill for times when your energy consumption is greater than the amount of solar power produced and stored.

1All markets except Hawaii have a secured panel. In Hawaii, the battery is connected to an emergency loads outlet, which will have four outlets for customers to use during an outage, allowing them the flexibility to choose what appliances remains on, such as lamps, refrigerators and freezers.

2Some markets offer the ability to push excess energy back to grid for net metering. Check your local utility for availability.
