With Half of Puerto Rico Still Without Power, Solar Provider Works with Local Partners to Create Jobs
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – January 16, 2018 — In a concerted effort to quickly service Sunnova’s customers’ solar systems and install more batteries—all while supporting long-term energy reliability in Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Irma and Maria—many of Sunnova’s partners on the island have begun creating new jobs and hiring more workers.
Sunnova Energy Corporation is a leading U.S. residential solar and storage provider and the largest provider of distributed, residential solar in Puerto Rico. By partnering with qualified networks of regional solar installation specialists in Puerto Rico, Sunnova has been able to facilitate a more stable energy source for its customers with solar while contributing to the local economy.
“We are proud to work alongside our local partners in this endeavor to create a more stable, long-term, solar-powered energy solution for the island while supporting economic recovery and growth for Puerto Rico’s future,” said William J. (John) Berger, CEO of Sunnova Energy Corporation. “More solar workers will help mitigate the downtime our customers’ solar systems may be experiencing while expanding our ability to install batteries on the homes of those who want the stability and energy resiliency that solar and batteries provide.”
“In the aftermath of the largest blackout in U.S. history, we are encouraged that our talented and trusted partners in Puerto Rico are facilitating job growth while continuing to provide solar to our customers. Puerto Rico has the opportunity to lead the world toward the future of resilient and reliable energy with solar plus storage.”
Windmar Renewable Energy, one of Sunnova’s partners on the island and a clean energy developer in Puerto Rico, anticipates growing their workforce by nearly 30 percent. “Solar has been creating jobs in Puerto Rico for the past decade. But now, after Hurricane Maria, solar energy has become an even more viable option, therefore creating more jobs than ever before,” said Juan Jose Gonzalez, Vice President of Windmar Renewable Energy. “The jobs created include everything from maintaining and repairing existing systems to developing new state-of-the-art microgrids with battery storage. Now is the time for solar energy to shine in Puerto Rico.”
ISO (Integrated Solar Operations) Group, a solar industry supplier in Puerto Rico and another Sunnova partner, anticipates growing their workforce by nearly 50 percent. “The many goals we can achieve simultaneously is amazing,” said Ralph Diaz, President of ISO Group. “From the creation of good paying technical jobs for our economy, to Puerto Rico’s energy independence from fossil fuels, to improved resiliency of the power systems in our homes/businesses—all of this is possible through the adoption of solar technologies.”
