Frequently Asked Questions

California’s DSGS Program is an innovative initiative that provides incentives to Californians for supporting the grid during times of high demand, primarily through load reduction or backup generation, to help prevent blackouts and contribute to a more resilient grid system.

The program is expected to run for a full five years (2023-2027), and enrollees are expected to earn around $125 annually.*

By enrolling in this program, you are:

  • Helping to minimize blackouts
  • Strengthening and supporting the grid
  • Pioneering a new way your Sunnova system can help the community while earning money

The DSGS Program is open to all California residential and commercial customers. At a minimum, each individual customer site participating must:.

  • Comply with interconnection rules
  • Own an Enphase, Generac or Tesla battery system
  • Not be enrolled in any other emergency load reduction programs
  • Have a battery system capable of discharging at least 1 kW for 2 hours
  • Have as your electric utility one of the following:
    • San Diego Gas & Electric (SDGE)
    • Southern California Edison (SCE)
    • Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E)

Sunnova will send eligible customers an enrollment email outlining the steps to sign up. We will take care of everything from enrollment to administration of the program.

When the grid experiences extreme demand, your battery will be used for load reduction at your property or be discharged to the grid (if your solar panels are producing enough for your consumption during an event).

The program is seasonal, so your battery will only be called upon from May to October, between 4-9 PM. It could be called any day of the week — however, it will only be called upon a maximum of 35 times per year, for 2 hours per event.

No, there are no penalties. This program is paid 100% based on performance.

Yes, your battery will maintain a minimum amount of reserve energy (at least 20%) while participating so it will be ready to back you up in the event of an outage.*

Your participation in DSGS is always in your control! You have the option to opt out at any time and may withdraw by contacting Sunnova at 1-866-SUNNOVA and speaking with a customer service representative.

It may take up to sixty (60) days to process your withdrawal, and withdrawal will not affect the other services provided to you.
